Treating Cocaine Abuse & Addiction

If you or someone you love is struggling with cocaine addiction, it is very important that you seek help as soon as possible. Cocaine can be extremely dangerous when abused, especially when taken with other substances including alcohol or benzodiazepines. Due to its potent and short-lived effects on the brain, cocaine is a tricky substance to quit once dependence takes hold. However, we want to reassure you that with the right help and support, overcoming a cocaine problem and breaking free from the daily habit of cocaine use is very achievable.

Here at Providence Projects, we’ve been helping clients break free from the cycle of cocaine abuse for over 26 years. With the help of our experienced addiction counsellors, we have designed a holistic addiction treatment programme built around the individual. We believe that every individual is unique with their own set of goals and needs. So we make it our responsibility to ensure every client leaves treatment feeling empowered, supported and ready for the next chapter in their lives.

Before we explain the process of rehabilitation for cocaine addiction, it’s essential to understand why you, or someone you love, should seek help for a cocaine problem and the importance of seeking support with the right intention and attitude for change.

Signs You Need Help with Cocaine

  • Cocaine addiction signs are similar to other forms of drug addiction. They can often lead to behavioural changes, as the individual becomes more focused on obtaining and using drugs rather than on their usual activities and relationships.
  • Cocaine addiction can be associated with behavioural changes that can lead to aggression or irritability, either when using cocaine or when unable to acquire cocaine.
  • It is not uncommon for those with cocaine addiction to also suffer from mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression.
  • People addicted to cocaine may also display withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit using cocaine, including mood swings, fatigue, and cravings.
  • Cocaine addiction can cause intense cravings for the drug, leading to obsessive behaviours, compulsive use of cocaine, or dangerous/illegal activities to acquire cocaine.
  • Cocaine addiction and cocaine abuse can also lead to health problems, including heart disease, respiratory problems, and stroke, as well as permanent damage to the nasal lining (cocaine nose).
  • Cocaine users and abusers tend to binge on certain days, whereas cocaine addicts will need cocaine every day to feel ‘normal’. Cocaine is a costly habit and can lead to financial ruin if left untreated.

You can recover from cocaine abuse and addiction with the right help and support. Our trained addiction counsellors will support you through the recovery process.

Help for Myself or a Loved One?

The first and most crucial step in finding help for cocaine is accepting that a problem exists. To help you or a loved one come to terms with this, it can be helpful to understand the signs & symptoms of cocaine addiction and the difference between abuse and addiction so that you can make an informed decision for yourself or a loved one.

One of the most critical factors in deciding treatment success rates is the willingness for change, so fundamentally, you come to terms with a cocaine use disorder, and you are committed to change before seeking treatment. If you need support or guidance or have questions about cocaine addiction treatment, our substance abuse counsellors are here to help.

Our Cocaine Rehab Process

When you’re ready to commit to treatment, we provide a free telephone assessment with our trained addiction counsellors, many of whom are in recovery and have been through the rehabilitation process. They will hold your hand through the assessment process with compassion and understanding.

During this free, confidential assessment with one of our certified addiction professionals, we will ask you questions about your cocaine use and mental health history, along with any medications you are currently taking. This is important and will help us to determine the best course of action for you during treatment. If you suffer from mental health problems, our therapeutic team must consider and factor this in when recommending treatment for cocaine addiction. Conditions such as depression or anxiety will need to be treated concurrently, also known as dual diagnosis treatment.

Along with your assessment, a date will be agreed to attend rehab for your initial 28-day residential rehabilitation programme. You will be assessed by our in-house GP upon arrival at our centre, who will perform a medical examination to ensure you are healthy and well enough to undergo the cocaine withdrawal process.

Cocaine Withdrawal

Cocaine withdrawal symptoms can be unpleasant but not life-threatening, so it’s essential that our medical team are happy with your physical and mental well-being before commencing your cocaine addiction treatment programme.

Once our team is happy with the results of the examination, your treatment schedule for the weeks ahead will be provided and consist of both individual and group therapy sessions, addiction workshops, fun activities and more.

Therapies Used to Treat Cocaine Addiction

At the Providence Projects, we offer a combination of individual and group therapies alongside alternative and holistic therapies, such as mindfulness and Yoga, which have been shown to reduce stress and improve mental well-being. We offer short-term and extended residential programmes for those who need extra support or more time away from the home environment to heal.

Residential cocaine addiction treatment programmes, such as ours, are self-funded and cannot be acquired through the NHS. However, the NHS does offer services and therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as part of an outpatient programme. Current waiting times for therapy on the NHS are lengthy, typically ranging from 6-12 months on average.

Benefits of Residential Treatment for Cocaine

If you or a loved one have had problems with cocaine for some time or have made several attempts to stop using cocaine in the past, a residential programme within a treatment facility such as ours offers many benefits, including:

  • Immediate admission
  • Highly skilled addiction treatment specialists
  • Structure and routine
  • Accommodation
  • A bespoke treatment plan, including detox
  • A safe, calm environment away from any triggers
  • One-to-one and group therapy
  • Holistic therapies, including meditation and acupuncture, support the healing process.
  • Aftercare & Family Support

Outpatient programmes, such as those offered by the NHS and notable charities, require you to attend treatment or therapies from home, typically once or twice a week. These programmes may be suitable for some individuals needing help with cocaine. Still, many do not offer the appropriate levels of care to support individuals in the early stages of recovery.

However, outpatient programmes or treatment can complement a cocaine recovery plan, such as long-term therapy or attending local support groups such as Cocaine Anonymous (CA). Your assigned support worker will help you find these services as part of your aftercare plan.

Loneliness and boredom can be huge drivers of a cocaine relapse, therefore, staying connected with like-minded people will encourage accountability and help you remain committed to a life of sobriety.

Our addiction treatment team are here to support you and your loved ones through the healing process. Contact us now to start your recovery.

Aftercare & Relapse Prevention

Your cocaine addiction recovery does not end when you leave treatment, and returning to normal life without the protection of rehab can be difficult for many. That’s why our recovery team will devise an aftercare plan that works for you. We offer a range of cocaine relapse prevention programmes as part of our sober management service; these include:

  • Sober coaching
  • Online counselling
  • 12-step Support Groups
  • Non-12-step counselling

Relapse typically occurs in the first few months after treatment, so it’s essential that all individuals, especially those in the early stages of recovery, commit to aftercare and a long-term cocaine recovery plan.

Family Support

We understand the impact that cocaine addiction has on the broader family, and we offer our support and guidance to loved ones during the cocaine rehab process.

Our family workshops and events are designed to:

  • Bring family members closer together,
  • Help with understanding boundaries,
  • Provide support and encouragement,
  • Provide further education about addiction generally and cocaine dependency in particular,
  • And help rebuild damaged relationships.

If your loved one is attending cocaine rehab at the Providence Projects, our team will contact you regularly to discuss progress and/or any questions or concerns you may have during rehab.

In addition, here is some advice for those of you who want to help your loved ones through the journey:

How to help and support a loved one through the cocaine rehabilitation process: If you have a loved one who is struggling with a cocaine addiction, there are a few things that you can do to help and support them.

Show your love and support: Understand that the family is the most robust support system. Hence, let the recovering addict know you are there for them, no matter what. Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement, and be there to listen when they need to talk.

Get educated about cocaine addiction: The more you know about the disease, the better equipped you will be to help your loved one. Cocaine addiction is not a choice; it is an illness.

Offer practical assistance: If your loved one is willing to seek treatment, offer to help them with transportation, childcare, or any other service they may need during rehab.

Be patient and understanding: Recovery from cocaine addiction can be a long process, and it may take time for your loved ones to get back on their feet. Cocaine rehab is just the beginning of the recovery process, and it can take some individuals several months to adapt to life without cocaine. Your loved one may also experience withdrawal symptoms when detoxing from cocaine, which can make some individuals feel depressed, so it’s vital that you maintain contact with your loved ones during the detox and withdrawal phase.

Make plans together post-treatment: Planning activities with your loved ones helps keep them busy and focused on staying sober. Try to plan fun activities in new settings and avoid social environments that may be trigger points, such as pubs. Staying connected is the best defence against relapse.

Cocaine Rehab FAQ

What is the best way to overcome cocaine addiction?

To overcome and beat cocaine addiction, individuals must first understand what led them to become dependent on cocaine. In most cases, addiction is one of the possible coping mechanisms for life’s difficulties.

Cocaine rehabilitation explores the underlying causes of cocaine addiction, including trauma, mental health issues and childhood experiences. It also focuses on developing new skills to help individuals live a life free from substance misuse.

You have to seek treatment by yourself; no one can force you into rehab because of your drug addiction; it has to be voluntary to be a fair and efficient addiction treatment. This is the best way for cocaine addicts to begin treatment to get rid of their cocaine dependency, starting with the detoxification process into further therapy for cocaine users in a safe environment.

Does the NHS provide cocaine rehab?

The NHS does not provide residential rehab programmes, but it can refer you to other free services. You may access these through your GP or local drug and alcohol service.

These services are offered on an outpatient basis, which means individuals will attend weekly sessions whilst living at home. These services are helpful, but they do not provide the same layers of protection offered by residential treatment programmes.

What can I do to help someone struggling with cocaine use?

The most important thing you can do is show compassion and understanding. Those battling cocaine dependences are suffering, and what they need more than ever are support and love. However, make sure to balance this with clear and consistent boundaries.

You cannot force someone into cocaine treatment; by doing so, you will only be setting yourself up for disappointment. If a person wants help, they will seek it out independently.

How long does it take to recover from cocaine addiction?

Cocaine addiction is a psychological illness, and therefore the recovery process can differ from person to person. However, many individuals report feeling better within the first few weeks of treatment.

It is common for individuals suffering from cocaine abuse to remain in a programme indefinitely, even after their completed treatment. We advocate for complete abstinence from cocaine to avoid future relapses and to join support groups. The success of any recovering addict will depend on the individual’s attitude to change.

What is the difference between outpatient and inpatient treatment ?

Inpatient treatment for cocaine addiction offers you a better and safer environment for your rehab process. You will be supervised by trained staff to monitor any cocaine withdrawal symptoms. Our treatment options will provide you with several types of therapies, from group therapy sessions to individual therapy, support group meetings and other coping strategies to help with treating cocaine addiction. Cocaine addiction, like other substance use disorders, is best treated residentially by an addiction professional who understands your needs and requirements. By being medically supervised, you can recover more efficiently from substance abuse.

Outpatient therapy for cocaine addiction leaves you vulnerable to relapse, but it can work for some individuals. Outpatient cocaine treatment can create more temptation to fall back into drug use and abuse. This is why we offer ongoing support through aftercare to help you with a successful recovery on the path to a healthy life.
