Prescription Drug Addiction Treatment & Rehab

Drugs are prescribed at GP surgeries and hospitals across the UK on a daily basis. Many of these drugs are necessary to keep us alive and the advancement in medicine enables us to live healthier and longer than ever before.

However, there are certain prescribed drugs and medications that can lead to addiction – opiates & benzodiazepines. Very often, these are taken innocently by an individual looking for a solution to either a pain related issue or a mental health issue. In the short term, these medications can be effective in helping to manage pain or anxiety. But in the long term, they can stop working as tolerance increases and lead to addiction.

If you are looking for help with a prescription drug addiction, please contact The Providence Projects right away. We have also attached some information about prescription drug addiction and the rehab process within our drug rehab clinic. This will help you understand the problem and the help that is available to overcome the problem.

Getting Help for Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription drugs which include opiates and benzodiazepines have been shown to be highly addictive. The most common prescription medications that are abused are the opioid pain relievers, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone and codeine. In addition, benzodiazepine medications like Xanax or Valium have been linked to many preventable deaths here in the UK.

Undergoing a detox from prescription medication is rarely sufficient, on its own, for a person to recover. Addiction is a complex and multi-faceted illness, which usually requires therapy and a comprehensive rehab programme to get better. By engaging in an intensive and structured rehab programme, clients learn the skills necessary to recovery and remain in recovery for good.

Our range of drug rehab programmes are designed to help individuals explore the underlying psychological and emotional issues which motivated addiction, and to ensure clients have the best chance of maintaining a successful, long-term recovery when leaving treatment.

We have a team of highly experienced drug and alcohol counsellors who can help you or a loved one understand the root causes of addiction, and help identify the patterns of addictive behaviours or triggers that could lead to potential relapse in future. Prescription Drug Rehab FAQ

How Long does a Prescription Drug Detox Last?

The tapering process may take 7-14 days depending on the severity of your dependence. During this process you will be monitored by our in-house GP.

Which Prescription Drug Addictions do you treat?

Typically we see admissions for benzodiazepine and opiate addictions. However we can treat other forms of dependence such as sleeping pills and stimulants (ADHD medication).

How long should I attend rehab for prescription drug dependence?

We offer a minimum 28-day treatment programme for substance dependence. You can choose to stay longer for a fixed cost per week. Some clients choose to stay longer to work on their recovery before returning to normal day-to-day life.

Is a prescription drug detox dangerous?

Under the care of our in-house doctors, a prescription drug detox is relatively safe. If they believe you may be at risk from severe withdrawal symptoms, they will provide medication to help alleviate some of those symptoms.

What causes prescription drug addiction?

There are many causes of prescription drug addiction and this is a particularly complex issue.

Opioid addiction can start as a result of an injury, accident or chronic pain issue. The medication is initially used to help manage the pain before addiction can develop. Once in addiction, the individual will take more for the same effect, more than they require or become dependent on the medication.

Anxiety is now one of the most common reasons in the UK that people visit their GP. Benzodiazepines including diazepam are often used to help manage anxiety. Unfortunately, over time, the individual’s tolerance increases, and the medication does not address the underlying issues. Therefore, more medication is required for the same effect. This often leads to addiction.
