Scotland is a country brimming with rich history and heritage: whether you’re in Edinburgh or Glasgow, Aberdeen or Dundee, there’s plenty to see and do. Forming part of the United Kingdom, Scotland has a population of around 5.5. million people. Like any other country, a percentage of these will experience drug, alcohol or gambling addictions at some point in their lives. Here at the Providence Projects, we regularly receive calls from people living in Scotland who are battling addiction: they want to stop, but they simply don’t know how, or where to access help.

Whether you’re struggling yourself or are worried about a loved one, we’ve put together this guide with the aim of providing you as much information as possible: about addiction in Scotland and the local help on offer in the form of drug rehab and alcohol rehab in Scotland, but also the range of residential rehab and treatment services available in the wider UK. Our aim is to point you in the right direction towards professional help, that is most appropriate and affordable to your circumstances.

We understand the level of pain and desperation that families will have to endure when their loved one is in active addiction. It might seem like there’s no end in sight right now, but help is out there. There are dedicated drug and alcohol rehab centres like ours, which have helped thousands of people find a way out of the vicious cycle of drug and alcohol addiction.

Drug Rehab in Scotland

The problem of drug addiction in Scotland is growing, with recent figures shining light on the extent of the problem. The drug mortality rate in 2018 had increased by a huge 27% from 2017 – with 1,187 people dying from drug-related causes. This figure is double what it was in 2008. The drug-death toll puts the country on a par with the United States, where the opioid epidemic has devastated communities. The statistics for Scotland are also higher than any other EU country, and three times that of England or Wales.

These figures are alarming, and demonstrate the unfortunate reality of drug addiction in Scotland. Despite the potentially fatal nature of this disease, we wish to emphasise that recovery is possible. You don’t need to be a statistic. Drug rehabilitation offers the best chance at a lasting and fulfilled recovery. It is often only by being physically removed from your old using associations and environment that you can break the relentless addictive cycle. Entering a drug rehab provides clients with a safe and nurturing environment in which to address their problems without the temptation of drugs and alcohol. Otherwise, it can be incredibly difficult to make lasting changes, especially given how ingrained the behaviours often are.

Alcohol Rehab in Scotland

Alcohol is the most socially acceptable drug there is, but also the most dangerous. It can be found in any shop or restaurant, and is readily consumed at all kinds of social occasions: from weddings to birthdays, holidays to cinema trips. Whilst this might not pose a problem to the average drinker, the knock-on effect for those with a problem is that alcoholism can be easy to disguise. Its harder for friends and family to know if someone has a drinking problem or when things are getting out of control.

In Scotland, alcohol is a problem just as in the rest of the United Kingdom. There is an average of 22 alcohol-specific deaths a week in Scotland, and over 600 alcohol-related hospital admissions. There has been some good progress made, when in May 2018 Scotland became the first country to introduce price controls on all alcoholic drinks. There has since been a dramatic fall in alcohol sales, and a 3% fall in the consumption of alcohol over the past year. So the introduction of a 50p a unit minimum price is clearly having a positive effect on the way people engage with and think about alcohol consumption.

Unfortunately, the problem of alcoholism is not so easily solved. The statistics for alcohol addiction and abuse in Scotland are still worrying, as is the difference in how alcohol and drugs are perceived in society. Whilst drug abuse is largely deemed unacceptable and serious, many people consider the overconsumption of alcohol as normal, and part and parcel of how people socialise. This might be the case for your normal drinker, but for the alcoholic, it is a symptom of a much deeper and darker problem.

Here at the Providence Projects, we understand the severity of all addictions, regardless of the substance. Alcohol is just as dangerous as any other drug and dependent drinkers require addiction treatment, often from an alcohol rehab in Scotland to get better, in the same way a drug addict would. We pride ourselves on providing the highest levels of care at our alcohol rehab, which isn’t just affordable, but also has a consistently impressive success rate. Full details of our rehab programme, detox and aftercare can be found below.

Rehab Programmes at the Providence Projects: Drugs, Alcohol and Gambling

Stopping drinking or taking drugs is no mean feat. It requires much bravery, honesty and courage to admit you have a problem and to seek professional help. Many of the individuals from Scotland who come to the Providence Projects for professional help have tried many other ways of stopping or attempting to control their addiction.

One of the main benefits of entering a private drug or alcohol rehab is the level of care, structure and support on offer. This is difficult to find elsewhere. Here at the Providence Projects clients are provided with medically managed detox, bespoke therapy programmes, alternative therapies, exercise classes and aftercare provisions, allowing themselves to explore who they are, and to grow and develop in their newfound recovery.

Our services have proved to be overwhelmingly successful since we opened our doors in 1996. We are one of the leading private alcohol rehab centres in the UK, based in Bournemouth on the South-Coast of England. Our location, just a few minutes walk from long stretches of beautiful golden beaches and the sea, is the perfect place for individuals to start their recovery journey.

We take a holistic approach to recovery and treatment, focussing on the entire person: mind, body and spirit. Group therapy is a daily timetabled activity, and we provide 1-1 counselling tailored to the individual’s requirements and goals. We also place emphasis on a range of alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, reiki, music therapy and yoga.

Aftercare Treatment at the Providence Projects

Aftercare is an extremely important part of the treatment process, as many people find they face their biggest challenge upon completing treatment at a drug or alcohol rehab. For addicts and alcoholics, the biggest challenge isn’t in stopping drinking or using, but rather staying stopped. To leave the safety, structure and routine of residential rehab can be daunting, which is why having a strong sober support network and a relapse prevention plan is so important.

We tailor aftercare to the individual’s needs – from attending fellowship meetings, to one-to-one counselling and creating weekly plans, to a 20-hour comprehensive aftercare outpatient programme, we can work collaboratively with the client to work out what best suits them. For those who have travelled from other locations, such as Scotland, and are looking to relocate, we help to find them suitable housing in Bournemouth too.

NHS vs. Private Rehab in Scotland

If you’re looking for help closer to home in Scotland, there are a range of NHS services as well as private rehab options available to you. Your best bet is to begin by visiting your GP to discuss the nature and severity of your problem, and how long it’s been going on. They will ask you some questions, before pointing you in the right direction for support.

Wherever you live in Scotland, there will be government-funded drug and alcohol services which offer a range of free help: from group sessions to individual counselling and outpatient day programmes. The services available to you will depend on your exact location. Unfortunately, due to the lack of government funding, specialist services are under-resourced and under-staffed, and so waiting lists may be lengthy. What’s more, these services cannot provide the level of care that many addicts and alcoholics require when initially trying to get sober. In this case, people prefer to opt for a private residential rehab to give themselves the best chance of lasting recovery.

We would also encourage regular attendance at mutual aid support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These groups hold regular meetings where recovering addicts go for support, connection, and to share what’s going on for them. Fellowship meetings provide you with a safe space to be honest with yourself and others, and to build meaningful relationships with people who have been where you’ve been, and stayed clean and sober over the years.
