The Rehab Treatment Process at Providence Projects: Detox, Rehab and Aftercare

at Providence Projects

Addiction can tear through lives, leaving you and your loved ones struggling in its wake. But with professional treatment, you have the chance to stop the cycle and head towards healing.

The need for addiction treatment

When you have lost control of your excessive drinking or uncontrollable drug use, are sedating yourself to get through the day, lying to loved ones or experiencing health problems, you should seriously consider professional addiction treatment.

Trying to stop on your own often ends the same way, with cravings taking over, withdrawal hitting harder than you can manage, and the cycle starting again. Even if you manage a short break, the stresses and unresolved issues that fuelled your addiction usually creep back in, pulling you toward relapse.

That is why professional addiction treatment is so important. Detox deals with the physical pull, therapy works on the emotional and mental patterns underneath, and relapse prevention keeps you safe when life gets tough again. Without all three, all the progress you have made can unravel, leaving you back at square one.

Step 1: Detox

Alcohol and drug detoxification is the critical initial phase in overcoming substance dependence. This process involves eliminating alcohol and drugs from your body, allowing it to begin healing. A successful detox serves as the foundation for recovery. Without detox, physical dependence on alcohol and drugs can persist, hindering the recovery process and making it challenging to achieve lasting sobriety.

When you arrive at Providence, you will have an initial medical assessment with one of our doctors. This will focus on your usage history and health status to ensure an appropriate detox regimen is drawn up. Under professional supervision, withdrawal symptoms can then be carefully managed to help you stabilise and prepare you for the subsequent stages of your recovery journey.

Depending on the substance you have been using and how you react to withdrawal, the detox timeline can vary a lot. During this time, you may receive some medication to help with withdrawal symptoms, but this is decided on a case-by-case basis. You will also begin a light therapeutic programme to start building the skills to help you maintain your recovery.

What to expect during detox?

While detox is an unavoidable first step, it is also when your body and mind are put under the most pressure. As substances leave your system, withdrawal symptoms kick in. These can be mild, like mood swings or poor sleep or much harder to handle, like shaking, nausea, sweats, depression or seizures. The experience depends heavily on what substances you have been using, how much and your general health.

Every detox timeline is also different. With short-acting substances like cocaine or alcohol, withdrawal often starts within hours and peaks within a few days. With longer-acting ones like prescription benzos, it can take days to start and weeks to fully settle. The first stretch is usually the toughest, as it is when cravings are strongest and sleep is most disrupted.

After this, things gradually ease, but it is not unusual for emotional issues or fatigue to crop up weeks later. This can be disconcerting, but you will have ongoing support from our team to help you push through it safely and as comfortably as possible.

For some people, alcohol detox can also bring on more serious symptoms such as seizures or delirium tremens (DTs), but these are rare and can be safely managed by our doctors.

Start the Rehabilitation Process Today

Finding the best addiction treatment is vital for long-term recovery success. Our friendly and compassionate team will hold your hand through the process until you learn to love yourself again.

Step 2: Rehab treatment

Detox is just the beginning of recovery at the Providence Projects because treating the physical dependence will not address the psychological nature of addiction. That is why after completing detox, you will begin a programme of rehab to address the reasons for compulsive behaviours.

In our inpatient rehab centre, you will live alongside others who are also working on their recovery. This shared experience creates a sense of community while also giving you the breathing space to focus on yourself without outside distractions.

During your stay, you will take part in therapies and workshops that teach practical strategies for handling cravings, emotions and everyday challenges. The goal is to leave rehab not just drug- or alcohol-free but with a stronger outlook on life and the confidence to stay in recovery long term.

By addressing the emotional and behavioural triggers behind your drinking, you can then start planning (and living!) your new life without alcohol. Rehab for alcohol addiction will also help you improve your relationships and prepare yourself for any triggers that hit you unexpectedly.

Each of these plays a unique role in helping you understand yourself, rebuild confidence and develop tools to stay well long after rehab.

Addiction treatment at the Providence Projects

The Providence Projects provides effective treatment for all kinds of addictions. Every programme combines safe detox (where needed), a range of therapies and relapse prevention planning to give you the best chance at lasting recovery.

Our treatment pathway includes:

1. Primary treatment

These initial weeks are spent stabilising both body and mind. Alongside medical detox (where needed), you will begin core therapies and structured workshops designed to give you the foundations of recovery.

2. Secondary treatment

In secondary treatment, everything shifts from short-term stabilisation to long-term preparation. You will explore past experiences, work through triggers and practise living without substances or addictive behaviours. It’s also the stage where your confidence really starts to grow as you go from feeling like a newcomer in recovery to actively shaping your new future.

If you feel you need additional support after completing the initial stages, we also provide sober living as an extended option.

Our substance treatment programmes include the following;

Alcohol Rehab Programme

Alcohol addiction can creep up slowly or hit suddenly, but either way, it can take an incredibly heavy toll. Our alcohol rehab programme helps you detox safely and then rebuild confidence, stability and purpose through therapy and aftercare.

From cocaine to cannabis, meth to heroin, every drug brings its own challenges. Our drug addiction treatment addresses both the physical dependence and the underlying emotional and social drivers of drug use.

Dependence on prescription medication can be just as destructive as street drugs. We offer specialist support for people struggling with prescription drugs like opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, antidepressants, sleeping pills and more, combining safe medical detox with effective therapy.

Legal highs such as Spice, mephedrone and benzo fury can cause serious mental health problems and dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Our legal high treatment helps you break free safely while therapy tackles the psychological pull and relapse risks.

Addiction isn’t always about substances. Behaviours such as gambling, gaming, sex, shopping or internet use can become compulsive and damaging. Our behavioural rehab programmes focus on breaking destructive cycles, addressing the underlying emotional drivers, and building healthier coping mechanisms. Through therapy, support groups and relapse-prevention strategies, we help you regain control and create a more balanced, fulfilling life.

Step 3: Relapse prevention and alumni

Finishing rehab is a huge milestone, but the weeks and months after leaving the Providence rehab can feel very shaky. Returning home after you have got used to the safety and quiet of residential rehab suddenly exposes you to all your old stressors and potential triggers. Our team will help you prepare for this shock with careful relapse prevention planning. This will include:

  • Spotting the people, places and situations most likely to cause a relapse
  • Planning how best to manage, avoid or overcome those challenges
  • Building daily routines and healthy habits for a more productive life
  • Creating a plan for when cravings strike so you’re never caught off guard
  • Strengthening your support circle so you don’t face challenges alone

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to detox at home?

Detoxing at home can feel like the easiest option, but it’s often also the riskiest. Withdrawal symptoms can be unpredictable and vary depending on the substance. Some can trigger dangerous seizures or heart issues, while others can cause acute mental health emergencies. On top of that, cravings can be overwhelming when you’re alone, making relapse far more likely. A monitored detox makes the process much safer and more manageable than trying to do it by yourself.

Yes, addiction treatment is completely confidential. At Providence Projects, your privacy is always protected. No one outside of your care team will be told about your treatment, and even family and friends will only be involved if you give permission. This confidentiality gives you the freedom to be fully open in therapy and focus on your recovery without worry.

Absolutely. Addiction doesn’t just affect the person struggling but also impacts families and relationships. That’s why family involvement is an important part of our rehab programmes. Through family therapy sessions, loved ones can better understand addiction, learn how to support recovery in healthy ways and begin repairing trust where it’s been damaged. For many people, family support makes a huge difference in staying strong after rehab and achieving long-term recovery.
