Spice Addiction Signs and Symptoms

Spice is the street name for a group of synthetic cannabinoids that mimic the effects of cannabis. These chemicals are usually sprayed onto dried plant material so they can be smoked or sometimes sold as a liquid to vape. When it first appeared in the UK, Spice was marketed as a “legal high” and sold openly in shops and online.

That changed in 2016, when the Psychoactive Substances Act made the sale and production of Spice illegal. Despite this, it has remained widely available on the streets and continues to cause serious problems across many communities.

What makes Spice so addictive?

As we mentioned earlier, Spice latches onto the brain’s cannabinoid receptors with far more strength and this is partly why it can be the driving factor in addiction. This means the highs come on harder but the tolerance builds faster too. Before long, the same dose barely scratches the surface and the person is caught chasing the feeling they once had.

The problem is made worse by the fact that no two batches of Spice are ever the same and with no regulation behind production, some of these can be 10 to 100 times stronger than cannabis. That unpredictability makes it almost impossible for someone to control their intake, even if they think they’re being careful.

Then there’s the other side of the cycle: the withdrawals. Once a person has used Spice regularly, it stops being about getting high and starts being about keeping the lows at bay. Headaches, anxiety, sleepless nights and constant cravings set in and taking more Spice can feel like the only way to quiet it all down. This is exactly what traps so many people in the cycle of addiction.

Spice concerns in the UK

Spice has found its way into some of the most vulnerable corners of society. In prisons across England and Wales, it has become a deadly presence, with 62 of 129 non-natural deaths between 2015 and 2020 linked to synthetic cannabinoids. Its cheap cost, strong effects and difficulty to detect in urine samples make it a tempting choice for inmates.

Outside prison walls, the picture isn’t much better. A Guardian investigation revealed that around 95% of homeless people in Manchester alone had used Spice, often as a way to cope with trauma or simply because it’s so cheap.

Younger generations are also being caught up in issues with Spice. In early 2024, five children in south-east London were hospitalised after inhaling Spice-laced vapes, one ending up in a coma.

Clearly, the drug’s reach has widened, demanding urgent awareness and intervention.

How can a Spice addiction impact a person’s life?

When people talk about addiction, the first things that usually come to mind are money problems and health issues. While those are certainly real, Spice is a drug that reaches further than that. Because of how it affects both the body and the mind, nearly every part of a person’s life can start to feel like it’s unravelling.

Mental health becomes unstable

Paranoia, panic attacks, hallucinations, psychosis and even suicidality can quickly become part of daily life. What starts as an ‘escape’ often ends with someone feeling more trapped inside their own head than ever before.

Spice doesn’t only cloud your mind; it hits your body hard, too. Breathing problems, memory gaps and blackouts are common, and people often find themselves in the hospital after collapsing or losing control in public.

Friends and family can only watch for so long before frustration and fear take over. Arguments, mistrust and distance often replace what were once supportive connections.

It’s hard to hold down a job, keep up with studies or even manage basic commitments when so much energy is spent either using Spice or recovering from it. Before long, opportunities slip through the cracks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Spice differ from cannabis?

Spice is synthetic and far less predictable than cannabis. Because batches vary so much, the risks of severe reactions and addiction are significantly higher.
