The Providence Projects have been providing a range of residential rehab and day rehab services to local authorities across the UK since 1996 with great success. Unfortunately, however, there is no such thing as ‘free NHS rehab’ in the UK. However, in certain instances you may be fortunate enough to secure detox and alcohol rehab or drug rehab funding through your local authority, most commonly via a drug and alcohol team. Over recent years, this has become more and more difficult to access as a result of both funding cuts and changes in strategy. However, depending on where you live in the UK, there may still be a possibility of accessing NHS rehab funding.
Every county, area or local authority will have its own policies about NHS rehab funding and some areas do not offer rehab funding at all. If you are fortunate to have a local drug or alcohol team who are prepared to support you with funding for rehab, please feel free to give us a call to find out more about our programmes at The Providence Projects. Once funding has been agreed, whether that be through your local authority or self-funded, The Providence Projects are able to offer comprehensive assessment either via telephone or face-to-face. This enables us to be sure we are the right place for you. A phone assessment gives you an opportunity to ask any further questions about our programme and facility should you be accepted.

NHS rehab and detox information
Detox
We are able to arrange and provide all aspects of the treatment journey from medical detox through to re-integration and sober management. We work predominantly with those people who have issues with alcohol or drugs, delivering a holistic programme to ensure we meet the needs of our residents. For many admissions, the first stage of the process may be either a drug or alcohol detox. This process is managed by our partners at The Providence Surgery who are one of only a handful of surgeries to have been awarded a rating of ‘outstanding’ by CQC. Although our doctors are excellent, one of the reasons for the outstanding rating was their skill and knowledge in the field of substance misuse. Detoxes will usually take between 7 and 14 days depending on the nature of the addiction. During this time however, residents will also be fully engaged in the rehab programme.
Addiction treatment programme
All residents will have an individual care plan. Their care plan is reviewed with their one-one focal counsellor during all therapy sessions. Goals are identified and reviewed as part of this process, which is a collaborative effort between the resident and the counsellor. During the treatment programme, you will engage in a variety of therapies, activities and workshops which combine to ensure their treatment journey is varied, interesting and successful. The range of activities which can be expected in an average week include:
- One-one counselling
- Group therapy
- Acupuncture
- Fun activity
- Workshops
- Assignments
- Self-esteem work
- Sport / exercise
- Relationship and family therapy
- 12 step meetings and much more.
The range of issues covered will include families, shame and guilt, self-esteem, relapse prevention, relationships, grief and loss, abuse, dreams and goals, anger management and stress management. As well as our primary treatment programme, The Providence Projects offer a full secondary treatment programme which involves securing on going work opportunities, educational opportunities and housing opportunities. For all local authority or NHS rehab referrals, The Providence Projects report to the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System and are fully TOP compliant. We have a range of literature which is either available for download or if you would like brochures sent to you, please let the admissions team know, who will arrange for literature to be sent to you straight away.
Drug and alcohol rehab referrals
The rehab referral process is very simple and our admissions team, led by Jon Radcliffe, are always here to take your call. Assessments can be carried out in person or via telephone to check suitability and a decision will be made within 24 hours as to the suitability for one of our drug rehab or alcohol rehab programmes. Our team of counsellors are regularly available to deliver presentations about the detox and rehab process and would be happy to come along to your office and attend a team meeting to give the team a better understanding of The Providence Projects.
Detox and rehabilitation centres have been badly affected by financial cuts year on year for the last 10 years. The number of detox places available in the UK has shrunk quite dramatically and continues to get smaller each year. The budgets for NHS drug and alcohol rehabilitation which used to be protected are no longer, meaning that most local authorities are diverting this money towards other projects. This means it is very difficult to get funding for rehab. In most areas, we find that there is a local provider who will deliver drop-in services and a type of day treatment service. Any monies available tend to be put into these services which, from the feedback we receive from our clients, do not deliver great outcomes.
Money is still used for detox and rehab programmes in certain local authorities, although there may often be either long waiting lists or lots of processes to go through before becoming eligible for that funding. Fortunately, there are those who still get funding for rehab and get the option of coming into treatment at The Providence Projects. However over the last 5 years, more and more of our clients are self-funding. In some instances, the individual will pay for themselves, whilst on other occasions it is family, friends or employers that fund the treatment. With this in mind, The Providence Projects have endeavoured to keep the rehab prices of both detox and treatment as affordable as we can for those who are self-funding.
Private rehab
More and more people are now seeking detox and rehabilitation programmes privately. The long waiting times, lack of choice, and lack of funded rehab is forcing those with addiction problems and their families to look into the private options available.
