“Lung languish” is a term we sometimes use in our daily lives to describe some problems with breathing. Respiratory problems such as lung infections and chronic coughing may be associated with alcohol addiction. Our lung is undoubtedly one of the most important organs we have. Still, it is disheartening when there are problems with it.

Alcohol abuse can have severe consequences for lung health. So, we need an understanding of the link between alcohol abuse and lung problems, treatment options, and the importance of prevention.

The Lungs — An Overview

The lungs are vital organs that provide oxygen to the body and remove carbon dioxide. They play a crucial role in maintaining our health. Each lung is encased in a thin membranous sac called the pleura and is connected to the trachea (windpipe) by its main bronchus (large air passageway). It is also connected to the heart by the pulmonary arteries and veins. The primary function of the lungs is to add oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide. This singular process is essential for our survival. Issues with our lungs might threaten mortality.

Lung Functions and Alcohol Abuse

Lung diseases can affect your ability to breathe and how well your lungs work. There are many lung diseases, some of which are caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. Other lung diseases are associated with environmental factors, including asthma, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Another common condition is alcohol-induced lung problems, also known as lung languish. Alcohol abuse can negatively impact lung function and lead to various respiratory issues, including lung infections, chronic coughing, and even acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Alcohol-related lung disease is a condition that affects the lungs and makes them more prone to infections and injury because of chronic alcohol consumption. Some lung problems that can occur with ARLD are:

  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis
  • Respiratory syncytial virus
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome

These diseases can cause symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, and weight loss. ARLD can be severe and life-threatening if not treated properly.

Another way alcohol abuse can affect the lung is through the immune system. It makes it more difficult for the body to fight off infections. This increases the risk of lung infections such as pneumonia.

Additionally, alcohol can damage the cilia, tiny hair-like structures in the respiratory tract that help clear mucus and pathogens, leading to chronic coughing and other respiratory problems. Do you see these signs of lung languish in your loved ones? Do not worry; there is help available for them.
